A 20-year-old man who allegedly punched Michael McEwen in Bondi last year, leaving his victim in a coma, was on curfew at the time and should not have been on the streets, court documents have revealed.

The man, from Kariong, was formally refused bail at Gosford local court on Saturday over the December 2013 assault which left McEwen in an induced coma.

Documents show the man - who cannot be named as he was a juvenile when the curfew was imposed - was supposed to stay at home between the hours of 8pm and 7am as he awaited sentencing on a charge of reckless wounding.

But this was broken as the man and his friend Jamie Ennis had drinks at a Bondi bar late into the night, then went to a kebab shop where they allegedly argued with strangers and staff.

Police allege McEwen was punched in the face by the man's elbow or fist as he held his hands up in attempt to placate him.

Despite fears he would not walk again, Mr McEwen was able to walk out of hospital in January.

It's believed the attack was caught on CCTV.

The man will appear in court again on Monday
