A cyclist has died in a crash with a car outside a high school in Sydney's east, police say.

The male cyclist, thought to be aged in his 40s, died at the scene, on Fitzgerald Avenue in Maroubra, on Wednesday morning.

A witness called triple zero just after 6.30am to say a cyclist and a car had been involved in a crash near Fitzgerald Avenue's intersection with Walsh Avenue, outside the Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood.

The cyclist was lying unconscious on the road, according to the witness.

Paramedics arrived and attempted to treat the critically injured rider, however he could not be saved. The cyclist is yet to be identified, police said.

Police said the driver of the car was not injured and will undergo mandatory drug and urine testing.

Officers from the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command have taped off the area while they investigate the crash.

A number of roads have been closed, including between the intersection of Fitzgerald Avenue and Bunnerong Road; Fitzgerald Avenue and Wild Street; and the intersection of Donovan Avenue and Walsh Avenue.

Anyone who saw the crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
