Baby left with life threating brain damage on Gold coast

A LOGAN couple have been bailed on grievous bodily harm charges relating to a brain-damaged baby.

Following a “significant” and “protracted” major investigation, detectives from the Gold Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit charged a man, 28, and woman, 24, with causing grievous bodily harm to the 13-day-old infant.

Police will allege the baby was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in October last year with life-threatening head injuries.

“The child survived but sustained brain damage,” a police statement said.

Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort of the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit said a major investigation lead to the charges.

“While this matter is now before the courts and further specifics are not available it is important to recognise that all people who have care of a child have a responsibility for their protection under law.”

“It is also important that we as members of our community and families remain vigilant to indicators of child abuse and take action to protect vulnerable children in our community.”

Investigations are continuing.

The couple were granted bail in Brisbane Magistrates Court today, to reappear in February.
