A woman is in hospital with serious head injuries after she was found lying unconscious near a busy intersection in Sydney's north-west.

A passer-by phoned triple zero just before 7.30pm on Sunday after finding the woman, aged in her 60s, lying on the footpath near Marsden Road's intersection with Stewart Street in West Ryde.

The woman, who is believed to live near the intersection where she was found, had severe swelling to her face and other head injuries.

A NSW Police spokesman said it was unclear how the woman was injured. He said it was possible that she had been bashed, or been involved in a car crash.

"We're not ruling out anything at this stage," he said.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before taking her to Westmead Hospital, where she remained on Monday morning in a serious condition. Police have been unable to speak to her, due to the severity of her injuries.

Detectives set up a crime scene at the intersection, and forensic officers are examining the area.

Police have urged anyone with information about how the woman was injured to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
