UPDATE: Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Amelia Harris said ambulances were called to assist two people who had serious head injuries at 2.03am on Saturday in Olinda.

The man was taken to Maroondah Hospital and the woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Ms Harris said.

The pair, both in their late 50s, were leaving the hotel after closing up about 2am on Saturday, when they were approached by two people in balaclavas.

Olinda police sergeant Paul Phillips said the man and the woman were then forced back into the Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd hotel and seriously assaulted.

Sgt Phillips said it was still unclear if anything had been stolen.

Police are now urging those who may have seen anyone acting suspicious, or any cars leaving the area at the time, to contact their local police station, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
