A man who suffered critical head injuries during a weekend assault in Sydney's Darling Harbour is not an aggressive individual and comes from a loving and supportive family, his cousin claims.

Emilio Bonanni, 25, remains in St Vincent's Hospital in an induced coma following a confrontation between two groups of people at Darling Harbour's Cockle Bay Wharf about 1am on Sunday.

Friends have posted messages on social media urging the marketing professional and fitness enthusiast, from Green Valley in Sydney's west, to "please please please wake up".

Police said Mr Bonanni was walking with a group of male and female friends along the promenade when they encountered three men.

An argument broke out and escalated into a physical fight between the two groups, acting Inspector Steve Hodges said.

Mr Bonanni was punched a number of times before he fell to the ground, hit his head on the brick promenade and lost consciousness.

His friends called triple zero and provided first aid before police and paramedics arrived just after 1.30am.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Mr Bonanni's cousin, Anna Aloe, told Nine News that she was shocked to learn of her cousin's injuries.

"I hope it was just a freak incident," she said.

"He is not aggresisve. He comes from a loving family, he has got good support, [the] youngest of three. A beautiful family."

One of Mr Bonanni's friends wrote on Instagram: "Please just make this a bad dream wake up bro we have our whole lives to live together, partying together so many more memories to be made."

Another friend wrote: "Our party boy's waking up bro, he's gonna wake up. Positive thoughts."

Police on Monday said they were still searching for three men over the attack. The men were last seen running through Town Square towards Wheat Street, where they got into a grey or blue coloured sedan.

One man wanted over the attack has been described as Caucasian in appearance, about 180 to 185 centimetres tall with black curly hair.

A second man is described as having blond or sandy coloured hair. There was no description for the third man.

Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage but cameras are not believed to have captured the actual assault, acting Inspector Hodges said.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
