A 55-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after falling from his bike during Wednesday's peak hour.

A CareFlight rapid response trauma team were called to Ryde Road at West Pymble late on Wednesday afternoon after the accident.

Fairfax Media understands witnesses at the scene said no cars were involved and it appeared the man may have had a medical problem that contributed to the fall.

A CareFlight spokeswoman said the CareFlight helicopter landed at a nearby oval, dropping the crew off as light rapidly faded at the scene.

"The injured man has suffered serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma by CareFlight's trauma doctor, working with paramedics from NSW Ambulance," she said. "The man was transported by road ambulance, with CareFlight's medical crew onboard continuing to provide treatment to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition."

NSW Police also attended the scene.
