A TEENAGER is fighting for his life after a car collided with his bicycle in Carina on Friday afternoon.

The 19-year-old man has been taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head and facial injuries.

The crash occurred on the intersection of Old Cleveland Rd and Dickenson St about 4:10pm.

The driver of the car was not injured.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

The accident comes as government statistics show alarming figures on the number of fatalities involving cyclists on Queensland roads.

Statistics show more cyclists have died on Queensland roads so far this year than in all of 2015.

Seven cyclists were killed in the first six months of 2016, compared to five all last year.

The increase is despite the April introduction of laws for a minimum passing distance between cars and bicycles.

Bicycling Queensland CEO Ben Wilson said the number of deaths was high.

“If we have a continuation of fatalities well above trend, there would be serious question marks,” Mr Wilson said.

“These are awful statistics and we have to drill down into them.”

Of the seven fatalities, two involved trucks and all of the victims were male.

Four incidents occurred on public roads which Brisbane CBD Bicycle User Group co-convener Paul French said demonstrated the connection between lack of dedicated bikeways and fatalities.

“When you have cyclists on the road with vehicles, especially with heavy vehicles, that definitely increases the fatality rate,” he said.

He was also critical of the current laws that protect cyclists, saying that not enough was being done to protect them from errant drivers.
