A Brunswick cyclist experienced every rider's worst fear last night when he collided with a an opening car door and then fell into the path of a passing car.

Police said the man was riding south on Lygon Street, Brunswick East, about 7.15pm when a door of a white Honda Civic opened, causing him to crash onto the road where he was run over by the second car.

Intensive care paramedic Jennifer Richards found the 27-year-old "confused" and "not sure what had happened because of his head injury".

"He had extensive grazing across his torso, arms and legs," she said.

"We believe he hit his head on some part of the car, knocking him unconscious for a brief period.

"He told us that had severe pain in his head so we inserted a drip into his arm and used that to give him pain relief medication as well as fluids," said Ms Richards.

"Thankfully he was wearing a helmet, but it's a timely reminder for all road users to be aware of each other."

Police said the driver of the second car stopped to help.

He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
