A 10-year-old boy will be questioned after his friend was accidentally hit by a mini-trail bike which didn't stop, police say.

A seven-year-old boy was playing yesterday with his two brothers near South Dennes Street, Wingham, on the mid-north coast, when he was allegedly hit by the motorbike.

The seven-year-old was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured skull and later flown to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

Police say they later identified the rider as the boys' 10-year-old friend.

Taree police Sergeant John Sargent said it was unclear whether it happened on a public road.

"It would appear it's children playing ... and an accident occurred," he said. "There's no malice behind it.

"It could have been a pushbike but it wasn't."

The boy will talk to police this morning.
