A toddler has survived after falling out of a fourth-storey apartment window onto a concrete driveway in northern Sydney.

The two-year-old boy was sitting near an open window at his family home in Water Street at Hornsby about 7pm yesterday.

His mother was distracted for a short time and he fell nine metres from the fourth floor apartment to the driveway below.

He suffered severe head injuries and was treated by paramedics and the Ambulance Service's Head Injury Retrieval Team, before being taken to The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

He has undergone surgery but remains in a serious condition.

In the past six months, seven children have been seriously injured after falling out of windows in NSW.

Hornsby Local Area Commander, Superintendent Michael Kenny, said parents needed to be extremely vigilant with their children when they were near open windows, especially if they lived in high-rise accommodation.

"Parents need to be taught how to secure windows to protect children from potentially-harmful falls," Superintendent Kenny said.

"It's important for parents to realise window screens are not there to protect children from falls.

"Install window guards into open windows and, if possible, open your windows from the top, not the bottom.

"Do not put furniture in front of windows and keep windows locked and closed when you are distracted or not in the room," he said.
