A HIGH-speed drag race in Dandenong last night killed a man who happened to be driving past, police say.

Two cars were seen racing along the Princes Highway, towards Dandenong Shopping Centre, just before the fatal accident at 7.45pm.

As the cars came to Henty St, a third car trying to turn right was hit and its driver, a 31-year-old man, killed.

The victim's car and one of the others smashed into separate light poles.

A 27-year-old suffered shoulder and arm injuries and was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition.

Police are searching for the second car believed to have been in the race, a red late-1990s Ford sedan.

Elsewhere, a 64-year-old man injured in a crash with a truck at Archdale Junction, near Maryborough, at 3pm yesterday, died last night at The Alfred.

And a 33-year-old man was placed in a coma after suffering a suspected skull fracture in a two-car collision in Keysborough.

A woman in her 50s was freed from the other car, which crashed into a fence.
