A WOMAN was fighting for her life last night after she and her baby boy were hit by a car while walking on a footpath in Sydney's inner west.

The mother, aged in her mid 30s, was pushing the infant in a pram beside the Princes Highway at St Peters shortly before 4pm when a sedan mounted the curb and struck them from behind, police and the NSW Ambulance Service said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a serious head injury and was in a critical condition late last night after emergency surgery.

The infant - a few weeks old - was thrown from the pram and suffered minor injuries. He was later flown by helicopter to Sydney Children's Hospital and was in a stable condition last night.

The male driver of the Lexus sedan, aged 25, was interviewed by police at the scene. He was to be taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Witnesses said the car, travelling north, mounted the curb, and struck the mother and baby.

''He hits her and throws her into the air,'' Nola Lambley told Channel Seven.

''She comes down full pack on the concrete.''

Two northbound lanes were closed and traffic diversions were in place, causing delays to peak hour traffic. Officers from the metropolitan crash investigation unit were examining the scene.
