A CLEANER leaving a warehouse in St Leonards on Sydney's north shore overnight was assaulted by a group of balaclava-wearing bandits and then run over after he tried to escape.

The male cleaner was leaving a warehouse in St Leonard’s about 10.20pm, when he was approached by four men wearing balaclavas and armed with firearms.

The men forced the cleaner back inside the warehouse that stocks electrical equipment and he was pistolwhipped and bashed before he attempted to run from the scene.

The four men where in the process of stealing goods when the cleaner managed to escape the building and run to the street outside.

He was then struck by a dark-coloured sedan, possibly being driven by a person connected to the robbery.

The man suffered head injuries and abrasions and was taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a serious condition.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are underway.
