Eight injured in horrific crash in Sunshine

EIGHT people including a pregnant woman have been taken to hospital after a four-car crash in Melbourne's west last night.

Ambulance Victoria described the scene which occurred shortly before 8pm (AEDT) in Sunshine as horrific, with two women placed into induced comas and transported to hospital in critical condition.

Of the 10 people in the four cars, only two, a young child and a man, escaped injuries.

"It appeared one car had collided with the side of three cars, critically injuring two people," ambulance officer John Crossman said.

One woman suffered serious head injuries, broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. Metropolitan fire fighters had to help remove the woman from the car before she could be taken to the Alfred Hospital.

A second woman with serious head injuries was put into an induced coma before being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.Two men in the same car were also taken to the Royal Melbourne, one in a serious condition.

A pregnant woman involved in the crash was initially thought to be uninjured, but subsequently was taken to hospital after her water broke.

Three passengers in a 4WD involved in the smash were also taken to the the Royal Melbourne, two in a stable condition and the third as a precaution.

The driver of the fourth car was assessed at the scene.

Police from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the cause of the crash.
