Driver dies after being trapped for 90 minutes

A man has died after being trapped in his smashed car for 90 minutes on the NSW south coast.

The man was driving south on the Princes Highway at Gerringong, when he crashed into another car travelling in the opposite direction, about 8.35am yesterday,

The man suffered serious head and internal injuries and was trapped in his car for about 90 minutes before being freed.

He was flown to Sydney's St George Hospital where he died shortly after 11am.

The 48-year-old female driver of the other car was admitted to Wollongong Hospital suffering minor injuries.

The Princes Highway was closed for six hours while police from the Lake Illawarra Crash Investigation Unit conducted inquiries.

Any witnesses to the collision should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
