Singer Jimmy Buffett is in hospital after falling off stage and being knocked unconscious at a concert in Sydney last night.

Video shows the Margaritaville singer walking off the front of the brightly lit Hordern Pavilion stage and falling heavily during an encore performance of Lovely Cruise.

He was reportedly unconscious for about 10 minutes as security and back-stage staff rushed to his side. The stunned audience was asked to leave the pavilion immediately.

Buffett, 64, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and was expected to be released later today, according to a message posted on his website.

"As you probably already know, Jimmy had an accident while performing in Sydney last night and was taken to the hospital," the message says.

"The doctors say he is doing well and will be released tomorrow. More info as we get it, and thank you for all of your well-wishes!"

The head of emergency at St Vincent's Hospital, Gordian Fulde, was at last night's concert. "He took a really nasty tumble," Dr Fulde told Sky News.

The Australia Day concert at the Hordern Pavillion was added to his tour following two sell-out shows at the Sydney Opera House.

Buffett is best known for his 70s hits Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise.
