AUSTRALIAN cycling champion Amber Halliday remains in a serious condition in hospital with head injuries.

Halliday remains sedated and under observation in hospital after falling heavily at about 8.40pm while competing in Adelaide last night.

It's believed Halliday clipped the wheel of another rider about 15 minutes into the 50-minute race. She fell, hitting her head and losing consciousness.

Paramedics treated Halliday at the scene before she was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

CyclingSA executive manager Max Stevens said it would be several hours before there was any definite indication of her condition.

"Any time it's head or facial injuries there is concern," he said.

"We all need to appreciate that it only happened 12 hours ago and we need to go 24 hours before we get a real indication.

"It was a simple accident that has had bad results for Amber, but if anyone can get through this with hope, courage and determination, it's Amber".

Further updates are expected to be released later in the day.

The former rower turned to cycling after the 2008 Olympics and became the 2010 national time trial champion.
