A man has been placed in an induced coma after being thrown from his car as it collided with a pole at Mentone early this morning.

Advanced life support paramedics from Mordialloc and two single responder intensive care
paramedics from Chelsea and Moorabbin were called to Lower Dandenong Road just before 2am.

Intensive care paramedic Barry Bates said when he arrived at the scene, the man was already out of the car.

"It appeared as though the driver had been thrown from the car after it hit a pole and he was found several metres from the wreck," Mr Bates said.

"The first paramedics on scene placed a neck brace on the patient and moved him using a spine board to keep him as still as possible in case he had suffered a spinal injury.

"He was given oxygen through a mask to help his breathing and a drip was used to give him fluids to help stabilise his blood pressure.

"We suspected that he suffered internal head injuries so we decided to place the man into an induced coma and take over breathing for him.

"He was given a mix of drugs to place him into a coma before a breathing tube was inserted deep into his airway.

"Once we took over his breathing, that allowed us to control the amount of oxygen going to his brain while also making sure that his airway was protected and clear."

The man was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition, with bruising to his chest and suspected internal injuries.
