A four-year-old girl has severe head injuries after being struck by a ute in the driveway of her northwest Sydney home.

Family and neighbours dragged her from underneath the vehicle after the incident at the Riverstone property about 4.15pm (AEDT) today, CareFlight said.

The CareFlight rapid response trauma team arrived via helicopter and doctors immediately began treating the child.

They were joined by paramedics who also worked to stabilise her.

She was flown to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for surgery and her condition was critical at the time of her 5.20pm arrival.

"The CareFlight trauma specialist doctor said the girl was hit by the tray top of the ute and knocked to the driveway," the organisation said in a statement.
