A TWO-MONTH-OLD boy is in a critical condition after fracturing his skull in a car crash on Melbourne's northern outskirts last night.

Police said the boy was in a car travelling north on Sydney Road, Campbellfield, that was about to turn into Barry Road when it collided with a car travelling south.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics arrived at the scene after being called at 8.30pm (AEDT), to find the boy being cared for by his parents.

"The boy was out of the car, in his parents' arms and was in quite a serious way,'' paramedic Alan Penaluna said in a statement.

"He was moved into the ambulance so he could be examined and we discovered he had a serious skull fracture.''

He was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

The male driver of the car was not injured, while the woman was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with chest pains.

The female driver of the other car was also taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with chest pains.

Police are investigating.
