A WOMAN suffered serious head injuries when she and a friend were cut down by an out-of-control motorist north-west of Melbourne last night.

Police believe the pedestrians, a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s, were struck by a north bound car as they walked along Cowie St in Ballan about 10pm.

The woman suffered serious head injuries in the accident and was airlifted by helicopter to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
