Two people are dead and another has been critically injured after a truck smashed into a tree in Victoria’s north this afternoon.

The accident occurred on the Midland Highway at Stewarton, about 40 kilometres east of Shepparton, just after midday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the truck left the road about 500 metres west of Stockyard Creek and struck a tree.

One of three people in the truck was killed instantly, while a second person in the truck died at the scene soon afterwards, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

Another man suffered head and chest injuries, and is being airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

The deaths bring the state’s road toll to 144 for the year, up from 128 during the same period last year.
