TWO people are being airlifted to hospital after a car slammed into a tree near Bruthen, in the state's east, tonight.

One witness said the gold Rover sedan became airborne before it veered into a ditch off the Great Alpine Rd, about 1km west of Bruthen, at 8.50pm.

Ambulance Victoria said one person was thrown from the car while the other was trapped underneath it.

Both are suffering serious head injuries and the man is being flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the woman to The Alfred.

"The lady who was behind the car said it became airborne,'' said a motorist at the scene.

"The car is basically part of the tree. It’s on its side.''
