Tim Redman of Hobart had come to Melbourne to watch an AFL match and was returning by train to his accommodation when trouble started on the Frankston-bound service.

A group of youths assaulting and abusing passengers dragged one man from the train as it stopped at McKinnon station.

The four then surrounded the man and threatened him with broken bottles.

Mr Redman stepped in but was stuck with a piece of ballast rock, leaving him with a brain clot. He remains in the Alfred Hospital.

His father Mark said it was sad that his son ended up in such condition because he was prepared to “stand up and be counted”.

“He decided to step in … and make a stand. He’s a pretty compassionate guy,” Mr Redman said.

“Tim’s just woken up. He’s told me how angry he feels.”

The 29-year-old nursing student had travelled to Melbourne for Friday night’s St Kilda Richmond game and was on his way home when the violence broke out.

Police believe up to 50 people would have witnessed what happened to Mr Redman.
