A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was brutally bashed in a random attack in Frankston last night.

Witnesses told police the 26-year-old victim was walking north on the Nepean Highway shortly before midnight when he was involved in an altercation with another man near the corner of Playne Street.

Investigators believe the Frankston man was struck to the head, causing him to fall to the ground and hitting the back of his head on the road.

He suffered a fractured skull and was taken to the The Alfred hospital.

"He was bleeding from a wound on the back of his head but was talking to paramedics at the scene, but he was quite confused about what happened," an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

"He was taken to Frankston Hospital, but was transferred to the The Alfred about 3am.  Doctors had already placed him in an induced coma by the time he was moved. A doctor travelled with him on the journey."

The man suffered a fractured skull in the attack and is now in a stable condition.

Police said the attacker escaped north on the Nepean Highway by foot, but have not released details of the man's appearance.
