A MELBOURNE heavy haulage company has been fined $130,000 over the death of one of its truck drivers.

Colin Todd suffered fatal head injuries while loading an elevated work platform onto a semi trailer truck on February 2, 2007.

He was inside the basket of the elevated work platform when its rear wheels lifted off the ground, causing it to roll backwards, crushing Mr Todd between the basket and the ground.

At the time, the elevated work platform was not connected to the winch on the truck.

Mr Todd's employer Redline Towing and Salvage Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to two breaches of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act.

County Court Judge Michael McInerney said a failure to use the winch contributed to Mr Todd's death.

Jude McInerney said the company's procedures specified that a winch should be used, but at the time, there was a mixed opinion in the industry about the need to use them.
