A three-year-old girl has died after part of a fireplace collapsed.

Devon and Cornwall police said they were investigating the circumstances of the incident, which happened in Plympton on Sunday.

A spokesman said: “The girl sustained serious head injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to Derriford hospital. The child was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “We received a call at around 4.30pm yesterday and sent a doctor, two ambulance crews and an officer. South Western ambulance service would like to extend its condolences to the child’s family.”
