Dash for Cash supports brain injury research

EVENT . One decade after the Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury hosted its first awareness and fundraising event, the 2012 gala will celebrate 10 years of growth and triumphs.

"Orange you Glad to See Me?" - the inspiration for the 2012 Dash for Cash - comes from some of the first words downhill ski racer Irwin uttered after his devastating 2001 crash, according to Lynne Harrison, partner of Dave Irwin and director of the Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury.

Lynne, along with Dave's sister Dorothy, who is also a board director, is the event organizer for the Dash for Cash.

This year's event will feature celebrity coaches, such as Felix Belcyzk, Chic Scott, Amy Golum-bia and Jungle Jim Hunter, and includes prizes to the calibre of heli-skiing and complete ski outfits. On Feb. 3, singer and songwriter Jace Everett of True Blood fame will perform at the new Creekside Bar/Restaurant, at the base of Sunshine Village.

A $10 donation will be asked for at the door.

All proceeds go to the foundation.

The event at Sunshine Village near Banff can only accommodate 30 teams of four, so it's first-come, first-served.

The Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury was created by twotime Canadian Olympic downhill skier and World Cup champion Dave Irwin and Lynne Harrison in March 2002.

It was initiated following Dave's remarkable survival and recovery from acquired brain injury suffered at Sunshine Village in March 2001.
