A 13-year-old boy has died after the moped he was riding on crashed into the back of a truck in Sydney's west early on Tuesday morning, police said.

Officers arrived at Tyrone Place in Erskine Park just after 3am and found the teenage boy lying dead on the road.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said early investigations suggested the semi-trailer was parked on the street when the black moped collided with the rear of the truck and slid under the rear wheels.

The moped slid under the truck's wheels at Erskine Park.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered fatal brain damage.

A truck driver who was at a nearby industrial business called police and attempted to help the boy, however the boy died at the scene.

Police believe two other boys, aged 16 and 17, were with the 13-year-old at the time of the crash.

The 17-year-old left the scene before police arrived to seek help, police said, while the 16-year-old boy remained at the crash scene. Both boys are speaking to police as they investigate the cause of the crash.

Tyrone Place is located in an industrial area, and trucks are regularly parked on the street.

Police have set up a crime scene at Tyrone Place, and officers are preparing a report for the coroner.

Anyone with information about the crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
