An anonymous tip-off from a public phone box led police to a lane in Sydney's south-west where they discovered a critically injured man lying on the road early on Wednesday morning.

The injured man, thought to be aged in his early 20s, was lying unconscious in Price Lane in Riverwood when police and paramedics arrived about 12.50am.

Paramedics treated the man before taking him to St George Hospital. He died from his wounds a short time later, a NSW Police spokesman said.

The circumstances leading up to the man's death are not known, and detectives are now trying to piece together his movements on the night of his death.

A group of distraught people, believed to be the man's relatives and friends, arrived at the lane early on Wednesday morning. They could be seen hugging each other and crying.

Officers from the St George Local Area Command have set up a large crime scene in Riverwood, and have taped off the lane, the public phone box where the triple zero call was believed to have been made, and a large area outside a gym on Belmore Road.

Forensic police could be seen dusting the phone box on nearby Coleridge Street, adjacent to Price Lane, for fingerprints.
